Notes, July 2023:
I really like this one, I can see where the seeds were planted for my later full-length field recording and tape-based works like 2022's "Particular Sites and Species" on Audio.Visuals.Atmosphere and 2023's "Peregrination" on Unfathomless.

What I also like is how you can hear two artists evolving, right before branching out into dirtier, noisier and ultimately more satisfying forms down the road- especially Kevin's awesome, highly-recommended DRESSING project. So damn good, you should have a listen if you haven't already. Seriously.

This album also signaled a deliberate shift in orbit for me, moving away from the safer confines of capital-A-ambient and into murkier waters; I parted ways with Muzan Editions the following year and struck out on my own.

Grey Magik is a long-distance collaboration between
Standard Grey (Nara, Japan) and Garden Magik (Dublin, Ireland).

Raw recordings were sent back and forth, and then processed/re-processed/re-re-processed through an assortment of analogue and digital means between late 2019 and early 2020.

"With Grey Magik - Muzan Editions’ own Christopher Olson (Standard Grey) and Kevin Kirwan’s (Garden Magik) first collaboration - we witness the creativity of two artists sharing the same vision. The artists describe their process of collaboration as “raw recordings being processed/re-processed/re-re-processed through an assortment of analogue and digital means”. They combine new sounds not just to complement each other’s sonic output but to push the boundaries of what is expected. For the listener, the tradition of Musique concrète a la Pierre Schaeffer or Luc Ferrari can only serve as a starting point. With every subsequent listen we are taken on new paths through a jungle of distinct sounds: mesmerizing loops, field recordings embedded in elegantly crafted drones, found sounds drifting in the background waiting to come forward and take over."
